Compress M4A to MP3

M4A files are already compressed, but MP3 can compress further at a different bitrate. The size reduction is significant for sharing, uploading, and storage.

The M4A on your drive almost certainly started life in iPhone Voice Memos, and M4A is Apple's default, and while it plays widely, many DAWs and editors refuse it or import it with wrong durations. MP3 is the destination because it plays essentially everywhere — downloads and every ordinary phone, browser, and player. You won't save meaningful space — the two formats are within touching distance at 1.2–1.4 MB per minute. Both M4A and MP3 are lossy, so this pair stacks a second encode — at a generous bitrate it stays inaudible, but if a lossless original of the M4A exists, encode the MP3 from that instead.
