Converting M4A to WAV for music production — how to get an iPhone voice memo, a client's AAC file, or an Apple bounce into a session without stacking a second generation of loss.

Musicians end up with M4A constantly, usually via a phone. The 2am idea hummed into Voice Memos, the riff recorded at rehearsal, the reference a client sent from their iPhone, a GarageBand bounce that came out as AAC. All of it is lossy, and all of it is worth getting into the session properly.

Convert to WAV before you import — that is the entire discipline. Drop an M4A straight into a DAW and many will decode it on the fly and re-encode at export, so your bounce carries the AAC's original loss plus a fresh generation. Decode once to WAV and that existing loss is frozen: comping, tuning, time-stretching, EQ, compression, and the final bounce all operate on raw PCM and add nothing further.

WAV also removes the timing problem. AAC-in-M4A files carry encoder padding at the start, which is a real and frequently-cursed source of the small offsets people fight when lining an imported phone recording up to a grid. A decoded WAV is sample-accurate from the first sample.

Be realistic about the source material, though. A Voice Memo captured on a phone mic in a room is compressed, noisy, and often clipped — converting it to WAV does not change any of that, it just stops it getting worse. Phone-captured M4A is superb for capturing ideas, arrangement notes, and references, and is very rarely release material on its own. If a client's track matters, ask them for the WAV or FLAC; most sessions still have one.

Output is standard 16-bit PCM at the source's sample rate — roughly 10 MB per stereo minute, which is nothing for a working file. The decode runs in your browser, so unreleased ideas and client material are never uploaded.

Should I import M4A straight into my DAW?
