Audio Format Guide for Meditation Apps

Meditation and wellness audio has unique format considerations: long file durations, binaural or stereo mixes for specific listening effects, and distribution through app stores with their own encoding requirements. Here is how to choose the right format.

MP3 vs AAC for App Store Delivery

Apple App Store (iOS): AAC in M4A format is natively supported and preferred. AAC at 256 kbps stereo is appropriate for music-backed meditation. AAC at 128 kbps stereo is acceptable for voice-only guided meditation. Google Play (Android): both MP3 and AAC are supported, but AAC in M4A delivers better quality at the same file size. For cross-platform apps, AAC in M4A is the single best format — supported natively on iOS and well-supported on Android.

Binaural Audio Format Considerations

Binaural audio must be stereo — never convert binaural recordings to mono. The binaural effect depends on the phase and frequency differences between the left and right channels; collapsing to mono destroys the effect entirely. Use stereo WAV or AIFF for mastering binaural audio. Export in stereo AAC (M4A) at 256 kbps or stereo MP3 at 256-320 kbps for distribution. Avoid joint stereo encoding for binaural — use full stereo encoding.

Long Files: Streaming vs Download

Meditation sessions often run 20-60 minutes — much longer than typical music tracks. A 60-minute stereo AAC file at 128 kbps is approximately 57 MB. At 256 kbps, it is 115 MB. Consider offering a streaming option (lower bitrate) and a download option (higher bitrate). For download, AAC 128 kbps is transparent for most guided meditation (mostly voice). For ambient or music-backed sessions, 256 kbps is worth the extra size.

Mastering for Headphone Listening

Meditation audio is almost always heard on headphones, not speakers. Headphone listening is more sensitive to phase issues, harsh frequencies, and clipping. Master to a conservative peak of -3 dBFS and aim for -16 to -14 LUFS integrated loudness for music-backed sessions. For pure voice guided meditation, -20 LUFS is appropriate — this matches the loudness of podcasts, which listeners also hear on headphones at comfortable levels.

Converting to App-Ready Format

Production workflow: record and edit in WAV 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo. Master and normalize. Convert to AAC 256 kbps stereo M4A for premium distribution. Create a 128 kbps AAC M4A version for streaming or preview. If MP3 is required, convert WAV to MP3 at 256 kbps stereo. Use the WAV to M4A converter at audioutils.com for AAC output, or WAV to MP3 for MP3 output.
