What is M4A?
Apple's preferred audio format. Better quality than MP3 at same bitrate. Default for iTunes and Apple devices.
What is M4R?
iPhone ringtone format — identical to M4A (AAC in MP4 container) but with the .m4r extension iOS uses to identify ringtones. Must be ≤30-40 seconds for iOS to accept it as a ringtone.
Why Convert M4A to M4R?
M4A and M4R are technically the same format — AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. The only difference is the file extension: iOS specifically looks for .m4r to identify a ringtone, not .m4a. Renaming a long M4A to .m4r doesn't make it work as a ringtone — iOS also enforces a 30-40 second duration limit. The most efficient ringtone-making workflow on iPhone: record or pick an M4A source, trim it to 25-30 seconds with the AudioUtils [audio cutter](/audio-cutter), then convert to M4R with this tool. The result syncs cleanly to iPhone via Finder (modern macOS) or iTunes (older macOS/Windows). The conversion itself is essentially a container swap with extension change — no lossy re-encoding step, so audio quality is preserved exactly.
Who Uses This Converter
iPhone Voice Memo as ringtone
Convert a personal voice memo (family member saying your name, custom alert phrase, recorded sound) into M4R for use as a unique iPhone ringtone or text tone.
GarageBand song clip as ringtone
Make a custom ringtone from a song you composed in GarageBand — export as M4A, trim to <30s, convert to M4R, sync to iPhone.
iTunes Store song as ringtone
For non-DRM songs you own as M4A, trim to a memorable 25-second segment with Audio Cutter, then convert to M4R for use as a custom ringtone.
Custom alert sound from M4A library
Pull any short M4A audio file (notification sounds, sound effects, voice clips), convert to M4R, and assign as a text/email/calendar alert sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I just rename my M4A file to .m4r?
You can — but only if the audio is already short enough. iOS rejects M4R files longer than 30-40 seconds as ringtones. Renaming a 3-minute song from .m4a to .m4r will sync to iPhone but won't appear as a ringtone option. Trim to 25 seconds first (with Audio Cutter), then convert (or rename if duration is right).
Will this preserve the audio quality?
Yes. M4A and M4R both wrap AAC audio in MPEG-4 — the conversion is essentially a re-packaging with a different extension and minor container tweaks. No re-encoding, no quality loss.
How do I sync the M4R to iPhone?
Modern macOS: connect iPhone via USB, open Finder, click iPhone in sidebar, General tab, drag the .m4r onto the iPhone icon. The ringtone appears in Settings → Sounds & Haptics. Older macOS or Windows: drag the file into iTunes, then sync to iPhone.
Can I use iPhone Voice Memos as ringtones?
Yes — they're M4A natively, so this converter works perfectly. Record your voice memo (or use an existing one), trim to under 30 seconds with Audio Cutter, convert to M4R, sync to iPhone. Useful for custom alert sounds, family voice messages as ringtones, or unique notification sounds.
Will iTunes Store M4A audiobooks work as ringtones?
Audiobooks (M4B) and DRM-protected iTunes purchases generally cannot be used as ringtones. Non-DRM M4A files (your own recordings, exported songs, purchased music after DRM removal in 2009) work fine.
What's the difference between M4R for ringtones and M4R for text tones?
The same M4R file format works for both. iOS recognizes any M4R file in the right location as a potential ringtone or text/alert tone. After syncing, you can assign the same file to different alert types from Settings → Sounds & Haptics.
Will GarageBand M4A exports work?
Yes. GarageBand on iPhone or Mac exports as M4A by default. Convert directly to M4R with this tool, then sync to iPhone. GarageBand on iPhone also has a built-in 'Set as Ringtone' option that handles the conversion automatically — useful if you create the audio in GarageBand to begin with.
