About the Opus Format
Opus is a modern audio codec developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation and standardized by the IETF as RFC 6716 in 2012. It was specifically engineered for internet use -- combining the low-latency characteristics needed for voice calls with the high-quality encoding needed for music streaming.
Technically, Opus uses a hybrid of two encoding engines: SILK (a speech codec from Skype) at low bitrates and CELT (a music codec) at higher bitrates. This makes Opus uniquely efficient across the full range: 6 kbps (intelligible voice) to 510 kbps (studio-quality music). At 64 kbps, Opus sounds better than MP3 at 128 kbps in blind listening tests.
Opus is used everywhere on the modern internet: Discord uses Opus for all voice channels, WhatsApp voice messages are Opus files (.ogg or .opus), YouTube uses Opus in WebM containers, and all WebRTC implementations use Opus by default. Despite its technical excellence, Opus has limited support on older devices and dedicated audio hardware -- which is why converting Opus to MP3 is a common need.
Common Opus conversion use cases
Discord recordings to MP3
Discord bots like Craig record voice channels as Opus .ogg files. Convert to MP3 to share the recording outside Discord or import it into a video editor.
WhatsApp voice messages
WhatsApp saves voice messages as .opus files on Android. AudioUtils converts them to MP3 or WAV for transcription, archiving, or playback on any device.
Web audio optimization
Convert your audio assets to Opus to reduce web page load times. A 128 kbps MP3 file converted to 64 kbps Opus will sound similar but be 50% smaller.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Opus converter free?
Yes. AudioUtils is free. The free tier outputs a 10-second preview. Pro ($9/mo) removes the limit so you can convert full-length Opus files up to 500 MB.
What is the Opus audio format?
Opus is a modern, open-source, royalty-free audio codec standardized by the IETF in 2012. It is optimized for internet streaming and VoIP -- at 64 kbps, Opus sounds better than MP3 at 128 kbps. It is used by Discord, WhatsApp, YouTube, WebRTC, and many other communication platforms. Opus files are typically stored with a .opus extension inside an OGG container.
Why should I convert Opus to MP3?
Opus is not universally supported outside of web and communication apps. MP3 plays on every device -- car audio systems, old phones, media players, and iTunes. Converting Opus voice memos, Discord recordings, or WhatsApp audio to MP3 makes them compatible everywhere.
Is Opus better than MP3?
At low bitrates, Opus is significantly better than MP3. A 64 kbps Opus file sounds comparable to a 128 kbps MP3. At higher bitrates (192+ kbps), both are excellent. Opus also has lower latency, making it ideal for real-time communication. For stored music where compatibility matters most, MP3 or AAC are more practical choices.
Can I convert WhatsApp or Discord audio to MP3?
Yes. WhatsApp voice messages are often saved as Opus (.opus) files. Discord voice recordings may also be in Opus format. AudioUtils can convert these .opus files to MP3, WAV, or any other format directly in your browser -- no upload needed.
