Android Audio Formats: Native Support and Best Practices

Audio format support on Android explained. Which formats play natively, what to convert, and best formats for storage and apps.

Android's audio format support is broad but varies between devices and manufacturers. Here is what you can rely on across all modern Android phones and what might require conversion.

Universally Supported on Android

These formats play on all Android devices running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later without any additional apps: MP3, AAC (M4A), OGG Vorbis, FLAC, WAV, and Opus. Android's MediaCodec framework handles all of these natively.

OGG Is Android's Native Compressed Format

OGG Vorbis is natively supported on Android from version 2.3 and is the format used internally by many Android system sounds and game apps. If you have OGG files, they play on Android without conversion. This is the opposite of iOS, which does not support OGG natively.

FLAC on Android

Android has natively supported FLAC since Android 3.1. FLAC playback is handled by the Android media framework, though hardware-accelerated FLAC decoding depends on the specific chipset. On Samsung and Pixel devices, FLAC playback is reliable and efficient. The default Google Files app and most third-party music players (Poweramp, Musicolet, BlackPlayer) play FLAC without issues.

Formats Android Does Not Support Natively

WMA requires third-party apps or OS extensions — not natively supported. AIFF is not natively supported on Android. Opus support starts from Android 5.0 — older devices need a third-party player.

Best Format for Android Music Library

For a personal Android music library, the practical choice is: AAC (M4A) at 256 kbps for most music — cross-platform compatible with iPhone and desktop. OGG at 192–256 kbps if you prefer open formats. FLAC for audiophile listening and archival. MP3 at 320 kbps for maximum player compatibility including car stereos and older devices.

Converting for Android

If you have AIFF or WMA files that won't play on Android, convert to OGG, M4A, or MP3 using AudioUtils. FLAC files from your music library can be used directly on Android without conversion.
