How to Convert WAV to MP3 on iPhone
Convert WAV files to MP3 directly on iPhone using Safari. Step-by-step guide for iOS users without a desktop computer.
WAV files are large — a 5-minute song at CD quality is around 50 MB. Converting to MP3 shrinks it to 5–10 MB for easy sharing. Here is how to do it directly on your iPhone, no computer needed.
The Size Problem with WAV
WAV is uncompressed audio. It sounds great but takes significant storage. A voice memo recorded at high quality in WAV format runs 10 MB per minute. For sharing via email or messaging, WAV is often too large. MP3 at 192 kbps reduces the file to about 1.5 MB per minute — small enough to attach to an email or send via WhatsApp without hitting size limits.
Converting on iPhone with AudioUtils
Open Safari on your iPhone. Go to audioutils.com. Tap "Choose File" and navigate to your WAV file. WAV files may be stored in the Files app, in Downloads, or in a specific app's Documents folder (Voice Memos saves as CAF or M4A, but third-party recorders may save WAV).
Select MP3 as the output format. Choose your bitrate: 128 kbps for voice recordings and speech, 192 kbps for music and general use, 320 kbps for the highest quality MP3 output. Tap Convert. When done, tap Download. The MP3 saves to your Downloads folder in the Files app.
Finding WAV Files on iPhone
WAV files reach iPhone through: AirDrop from a Mac, downloading from Safari, importing through a third-party recording app (some field recording apps like Røde Reporter save WAV), or syncing through iTunes. Once in the Files app, they are accessible by AudioUtils through the file picker.
Sending the MP3
From the Downloads folder in Files, tap the MP3, then tap Share. Options: Mail (email attachment), AirDrop, Messages, WhatsApp, Google Drive, or any app installed on your iPhone. For voice memos, a 1-minute recording at 128 kbps MP3 is under 1 MB — small enough to send anywhere.
